These striking buildings are almost identical 2-form entry primary schools, built for a new community on the outskirts of Gloucester.

They were both procured for Gloucestershire County Council (GCC) through separate 106 agreements, delivered by developer QUVL and built by Speller Metcalfe.

Kingsway School was the first community building in the area and needed to provide a strong identity. The use of colour and materials and the bold roof form made this design an eye-catching landmark.

The learning environment has been carefully crafted to provide flexible spaces both inside and out. Classrooms benefit from excellent natural daylight and cross-ventilation and open onto outdoor play areas. Digital energy-use readouts, solar panels and wind-catchers are design features that provide direct opportunities for the pupils to learn. The building achieved a BREEAM very good rating.

Following the success of the first primary school the developer QUVL and GCC were keen to retain the same design and team for the second school. The Waterwells layout and form is a copy of Kingsway Primary School built in 2008. It creates another eye catching landmark building using the same materials, to unite the community but with different accent colours to give a separate identity to each school. An Early Years Centre has been completed on the same site providing nursery provision for the local community.
