St Georges House

St Georges House is a substantial Victorian building which housed retired seamen; 30 bedsit flats were grouped around a shared courtyard spanning 5 storeys on the side of Brandon Hill in Bristol. The building was acquired by Bristol City Council in the mid 20C; by 2003 it was deemed unfit for purpose and Quattro prepared an imaginative scheme for Jephson HA. This proposed a young persons project for 25 residents in the lower section of the building with the upper levels being remodelled for 11 one bedroom flats. The building’s Conservation Area status demanded sensitivity; at the same time there was an aspiration for a bold new profile and additional space was desperately needed. Quattro introduced a new light and airy glass infill to create an entrance foyer and recreation rooms for the project; this provides a stunning entrance and has successfully transformed the appearance of the building. Inside, the existing structure has been cleverly adapted to accommodate the new flats without losing the character of the old building.
