The Withywood Centre

This inspirational community led project is at the heart of the regeneration of Withywood. The centre provides a church, a health centre, community café, function halls, internet café, youth café, play zone, meeting rooms, advice centre and project offices. The building is designed for ultimate flexibility and multiple use, where ease of management and security is key.

In addition to designing the building for long life, a number of features enhance sustainability. The walls and roof include high levels of insulation, and Solar Collectors supplement the supply of hot water. Where ventilation is required, heat is recovered from the extracted air. Rainwater is collected for use in flushing WCs, and lighting controls include automatic dimming.

The project is a successful demonstration of partnership working to achieve effective, sustainable regeneration. Local involvement has been a keystone at all stages and the project has played an important part in helping to build confidence, skills and capacity with the community. The project can be seen as an exemplar for communities everywhere working towards regeneration and sustainability.
