Challenge
Quattro’s Architectural Design Services were deployed at Tondu as part of a continuation of the partnership between Bridgend County Borough Council and Linc Cymru to create a combined care home and Extra Care provision within a single building. The development provides 15 Care beds, 25 Extra Care apartments and 19 two/ three-bedroom houses.
The purpose of the scheme is to provide care to those residents in need within this close-knit community, whilst also supplementing the shortfall of Extra Care elderly apartments together with additional Retirement Living bungalows responding to the demographic needs of the area.
Facilities include: a dining space, lounge sitting area, hair salon and therapy room, bistro kitchen, resident’s laundry, guest bedroom, accessible WCs, staff room and sluice room.

Solution
In order to achieve the partnership’s vision, Quattro’s Senior Living Architects future-proofed the ground floor Care bed spaces to enable Linc Cymru to convert 2 Care bed spaces into a one-bed apartment or vice versa, depending on future requirements. This was key to the Extra Care design.
The design principles for the combined services took maximum advantage of the shared communal space, in particular the serving of meals to the Care element of the scheme. The hairdressing salon, therapy room, assisted bathroom, external and internal communal spaces all benefited from the wider demographic of residents using the facilities.
The client and design team’s attention to detail has produced a contemporary design with interior and exterior landscaping, providing residents with a high quality, relaxing and non-institutional development.
The apartments are lovely; the lobby looks and feels like you are in a luxury hotel. The garden is beautiful. You forget it is an extra care facility the moment you step into the building. When I am elderly, I would like to purchase a home there.
Alliance Homes Group
These are great new homes created with older residents in mind. This accommodation provides security, accessibility and freedom in later life. There is a shortage of accommodation for older people which is fit for purpose for the future so this is an excellent and welcome addition.
Northampton North
I’m very pleased construction's complete on the impressive Maesyffynon Extra Care facility, which will help older people live as active and independent lives as possible and receive targeted support for their needs. This site in Aberaman is the first of five new facilities for RCT, to improve our care provision.
