Challenge
Quattro was appointed by Stonewater, to develop a scheme for the replacement of 16 number two storey flatted accommodation, situated on Waterworks Lane, Leominster. The existing accommodation was no longer fit for purpose for existing and future customers.
Herefordshire Council and Leominster Town Council had signed on to the Armed Forces Covenant and approached Stonewater to deliver a Veterans scheme in Leominster. This site was identified as an ideal location for the first Veterans Community Build in Herefordshire, and working in conjunction with Herefordshire Council, the Veterans Community Self Build Agency and The Royal British Legion, Quattro were asked to provide a scheme for warm, efficient, modern and safe housing.

Solution
Through extensive consultation with all stakeholders and the local planning authority, a full Lifetime Homes compliant scheme was developed. This largely followed the existing street pattern, respecting and responding to the existing street pattern providing active and perimeter frontage and maintaining a built form in keeping with the existing surrounding residential scale.
We proposed a contemporary approach to the elevational treatment with brick step detail banding incorporated to provide elevational interest and texture. Box dormers and recessed porches have helped to create rhythm and depth along the street/ site frontage. All site constraints were assessed including, the protection of neighbouring resident amenity, the protection and enhancement of the limited site ecology and tree scape.
Against all the odds and during the pandemic, six previously homeless veterans completed this self-build scheme of 19 affordable homes in Leominster, Herefordshire in time for Christmas. You can read more about their story here:
This scheme has changed my life. Only last year I was sleeping rough with no hope and my health suffered. Now I have got my self-esteem back and I am going to have a home I can bring my children to and celebrate Christmas together. I have also gained qualifications...
