Sustainability lies at the core of our thinking

Quattro Design Architects is the award-winning architectural practice behind Gloucestershire’s hugely successful Shire Hall project, which has scooped even more awards at this year’s award ceremonies.

Our multi award-winning project proved to be a favourite at the Constructing Excellence South West awards (CESW) held virtually on the 4th December, adding 3 more accolades to its portfolio.  The transformation of Shire Hall was crowned the Building Project of the Year and won both the Value award and the Integration and Collaborative Working award.

The prestigious CESW awards are a celebration of the best of construction across the UK and showcase achievements for those who are proactively driving excellence in the industry.

We are delighted to have been recognised by these awards and excited to see that Shire Hall will now be entered into the Constructing Excellence National awards due to be announced in 2021.

Situated in the centre of Gloucester, Shire Hall is the transformation of Gloucestershire County Council’s (GCC) tired and inefficient 1960’s building, into facilities fit for the future, and benefitting from reduced maintenance and running costs.

The building is now a state-of-the-art office facility and an architectural landmark enhancing the regeneration of this historic city.

Quattro designed a highly sustainable workplace, one that has been responsibly and dynamically transformed over 120 weeks and 85 phases.

 

Our Sustainable Design included the introduction of Sustainability ingenuities, such as, the use of Thinfilm Technology and Building Integrated Photo Voltaics, BIPVS  (new to the UK) in the external cladding system. The BIPVS generate the buildings own electricity, and this, along with the improved thermal envelope, high levels of insulation and a natural ventilation strategy consisting of integrated vents into the building fabric, mean the development is self-sufficient, producing 1/3 of its annual energy requirements.

Shire Hall is a fantastic example of sustainability done well. With carbon reduction being a primary focus, enhancements to the natural ventilation strategy, improved daylighting and high levels of insulation radically improved the environmental efficiency of the building, not to mention overall improvements to the health and wellbeing of the Council’s 2000 employees on a daily basis which was of critical importance to the Council.

Further sourcing of local expertise, contractors and suppliers along with high recycled materials reduced the carbon footprint of the project further, whilst and supporting, Gloucestershire’s 2030 strategic sustainability goals.
