Cleeve House – ALD Care Home

With decades of experience in extra care architecture, Quattro was commissioned by Gloucestershire Health and Care Trust to investigate the feasibility of locating a 10 one-bed flat Learning Disability Unit on two potential sites in Gloucester. The brief required each flat to have access to the main unit, a garden and access to a secured car parking space, with communal therapy spaces and staff offices.

As part of the ongoing feasibility, Quattro’s Healthcare Design Team are currently investigating one of the sites, Cleeve House, for this new 10 bed LD inpatient unit with Gloucestershire Health and Care Trust.

Innovation is at the heart of the client’s design brief. Their objective is to create an exemplar building and through a collaborative design process, albeit at feasibility stage, we are delivering an environment that will promote the integration of physical and mental wellbeing. This includes a social hub with café, therapy rooms, gymnasium and life skills rooms.

Our extensive experience of working with this client group means we understand the requirements for creating a therapeutic and robust space. Our Healthcare Architects are incorporating high levels of natural daylight, flower gardens and green spaces that are woven into the core of the building to create a central street scene, connecting patients with nature to have a positive impact on psychological and physical recovery.

We have been innovative with our design due to site constraints. Quattro’s initial design maximises the assets of the existing site using the mature trees within a communal garden and providing courtyards to allow natural light into the therapeutic spaces in the middle of the plan. Each flat has a secured car parking space to enable individuals to access their flats in a safe environment. These are shared between two flats to make the most of the tight site.

Our Healthcare Design Team recognise the importance of specifying the correct fixtures and fittings ensuring they are robust and having good lines of sight. Consideration has been given to curved walls and simple circulation systems enabling observation by staff.

Human-centred design, benefiting staff and patients alike, lies at the heart of Quattro’s extra care architecture design.
