Kingsway Primary School is a two-form entry (420 pupil) school built for a ‘village’ development on the outskirts of Gloucester.

Quattro’s vision for Kingsway was to design a building that created a sense of place. The design reflects the spirit of the former RAF site on which it is built and creates an environment that enhances learning and teaching, delighting children, parents and staff through its form and colours.

The Challenge

Kingsway Primary School is a two-form entry (420 pupil) school built for a ‘village’ development on the outskirts of Gloucester. It was procured for Gloucestershire County Council through a S106 agreement, delivered by the developer Quedgeley Urban Village Ltd (QUVL) and built by Speller Metcalfe.

It was the first community building to be built in the area and needed to provide a strong identity. With 35+ years’ experience in school building design, Quattro was appointed as Education Architect to deliver this exciting new project.

Our Solution

Quattro’s vision for Kingsway was to design a building that created a sense of place. The design reflects the spirit of the former RAF site on which it is built and creates an environment that enhances learning and teaching, delighting children, parents and staff through its form and colours.

The use of colour and materials and the bold roof form made this design an eye-catching landmark. The learning environment has been carefully crafted to provide flexible spaces both inside and out. Classrooms benefit from excellent natural daylight and cross-ventilation and open on to outdoor play areas.

There are many sustainable design features which provide direct opportunities for the pupils to learn. These include digital energy-use readouts, solar panels and wind-catchers. The project achieved a BREEAM ‘very good’ rating.

Following the success of Kingsway Primary School, the developer QUVL and Gloucestershire County Council were keen to retain Quattro as Education Architects for the second school project.
